Standardised eye charts are required for funding, sharing, etc. Converting to visual acuity assumes that feature size refers to the smallest visible detail, that the detail is high contrast, and that clutter / crowding is highly controlled. This is based on the formula for resolution acuity, a different sort of metric to recognition acuity (especially for children).
